Under the open sky:
The first time Sadie saw Malcolm, they were both six years old and he was sitting alone, picking at a sandwich. Hating to see anyone by themselves, she picked up her own lunch and marched over.
“Hey, can I sit here?” he looked up at her blankly.
“Why?” she was confused.
“Because you’re by yourself.” She explained logically. He shrugged his little shoulders and slid over on the bench, making room for her. Smiling, she sat down.
“So, what do you have?”
Across the sea:
They were twelve now and people kept bugging him about weather or not she was his girlfriend. Poor Bobby Johnson had been sent home yesterday with a bloody nose and split lip for asking. Now she was walking over and she didn’t look pleased. He swallowed, hard.
“Hey Sadie…”
“Don’t you hey me, Malcolm Tyler. I need some answers.”
“What are you…” he began.
“Don’t even. I heard what you did to Bobby Johnson. Why’d you do it?” there was fire in her eyes and he was drawn in. Impulsively, he leant forward and kissed her. She only froze for a second before kissing back.
Move so pretty:
18 now, she felt ready to take on the world, or college, at any rate. He stood in the doorway, watching her pack up her life, silently. She finally looked up at him and there were tears in her eyes. Even now, when she was getting ready to leave him, at the sight of her tears, he was undone. In two long strides, he was across the room, scooping her up. They stood like that for a long time, just crying together.
“I’ll wait for you, I promise.” He whispered as she sat in her car.
“I’ll come back.” She whispered back.
Home again:
24 now, they stood just regarding each other. This moment had been a long time coming, and now that it was actually here, she didn’t have any words. She took him in, the shorter blonder hair, the sleeker build, everything. For a moment, she thought he had gone, but one look into his face and she found him again. The revelation that he was still himself made her smile. Though time and new friends had changed her some, he could still see the girl he loved in her eyes.
“Welcome home.” He whispered. Then she was in his arms and everything was as it should be.
